What does the stamina bar do?

What happens if I hit a hurdle?
Your horse stumbles for a moment and loses lots of speed — rivals love passing you then. Jump a little before the hurdle, not on top of it.
How is the score counted?
1st place = 100, 2nd = 60, 3rd = 30, plus +5 per clean hurdle jump and a bonus for fast finishing times.
